THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION (MCM-511)

Assignment No 2

Q No.1            Discuss the major assumption of Social Cognitive Theory. Explain four uniquely human characteristics of Bandura’s theory with the help of examples. (Marks: 15)

Social cognitive theory is a hypothetical standpoint in which learning by determining the behavior of others is the emphasis of study. The theory is stranded through various elementary assumptions. One of the assumptions is that individuals can learn by perceiving the behaviors of others. People can obtain new behaviors and knowledge through merely observing a model.      Theory is utilized in communication, psychology and learning clenches that parts of an entity's knowledge procurement could stand straight concomitant to observing others inside the perspective of social communications, understandings, and exterior media inspirations. Social cognitive theory of Albert Bandura is centered on the reconnaissance of representations, whichever in animate or emblematic arrangement. The three elementary aspects on which theory depend on are the collaboration within the environment and the individual, an agreed actions, and interior observant elements. The communication among three characteristics is acknowledged by means of reciprocal determinism. In broad-spectrum, an individual observe a model intermingle with the surroundings and notice the consequence to comprehend in what way one ought to riposte once retained in a similar condition. The individual need hence pay deep concentration towards model and ensure respectable cognition abilities to be capable to remember the events at far along period. Social Cognitive Theory has numerous assumptions and principles:

§  Humans are social beings who learn by judgment of the conduct of people and the results (cavalries and penalties) related with that conduct.
§  Judged behaviors which are compensated will be reiterated
§  The individual with being imitated behavior is entitled as the role model and the procedure of imitation is known as modeling.
§  Learning can seldom happen without any amendment in behavior. This behavior might happen at a future stage, or it might not ever happen.
§  Cognitive processes perform a significant part in learning. Certain of these cognitive processes comprise consideration, recall, preparation, inspiration and anticipations of reinforcement or punishment.

FOUR UNIQUELY HUMAN CHARACTRISTICS OF BANDURA’S THEORY

Social cognitive theory of Bandura accentuates the significance of these four uniquely human characteristics which are appended below:-

§  Symbolizing capacity
§  Self-regulatory capacity
§  Self-reflective capacity
§  Vicarious capacities (Bandura, 1994)

Symbolizing Capacity

Humanoid communication is grounded on a structure of shared meaning acknowledged as language which is created of many symbols. These symbols happen at more than on intangible level. Alphabetical letters are signs utilized in manufacturing of word. Words function as symbols to characterize particular things, views, or philosophies. The ability to comprehend and utilization of these symbols permits populaces to accumulate and process and transmute perceived understanding into cognitive models that direct them in imminent actions and conclusions.

Self-Regulatory Capacity

The self-regulatory capacity contains the impressions of motivation and assessment. Individuals have the aptitude to encourage themselves to accomplish particular objectives.  Peoples predispose to assess their own behavior and react accordingly for their self-motivation for the purpose of accomplishment certain objectives. Through this process behavior is self-directed and self-regulated.

Self-Reflective Capacity

Self-Reflective Capacity encompasses the course of thought corroboration. This is the aptitude of an individual that how to carry out a self-check to certify his or her thinking is right. Bandura acknowledged four diverse self-reflective “modes” utilized in thought corroboration:

§  Enactive Mode
§  Vicarious Mode
§  Persuasive Mode
§  Logical Modes

1. Enactive Mode
An individual considers the agreement between assumption and the consequences of actions in enactive mode. Actions of individuals validate his/ her thought and deliver corroborations.

2. Vicarious Mode
In vicarious mode Judgments of experience of someone other and the results of those practices assist to endorse or contradict the authenticity of thoughts. Instance—let's assume a lady considers that womenfolk are prone to inferiority complex and the TV comes in the watches Xena and then her opinions regarding feminine lowliness might be stunned into certain type of reevaluation.

3. Persuasive Mode
A potent ad functions as the great demo of the persuasive mode, expressly a commercial in which an individual on the thoroughfare is satisfied to alter product. Notwithstanding the supplementary price, the viewer may be influenced by the choice of the individual for buying the brand promoted.

4. Logical Mode
It embroils corroboration by which hitherto assimilated procedures of inference. Perchance the individual who was influenced to experiment the fresh brand liked it so far that he finalized to utilize the greater price brand of the other categories of goods.

Vicarious Capacity

Vicarious Capacity is the skill to gain deprived of straight experience, highlights the prospective societal effect of mass media for good or bad. For instance, of affirmative societal effect the vicarious capacity permits a individual to acquire entire categories of advantageous things through merely reading of watching a TV show demonstrating these pro-social actions. Moreover, on the adverse prospective, persons might observer and seek definite disruptive attitude to which they might not else have been exposed.

Q No.2            Do you think that violence in cartoon programs like Ban-Ten and Tom and
Jerry is increasing aggressive behaviors among children? Discuss in the light
of any such child from your family or surroundings. (Marks: 05)

SOLUTION:

Regular engagement in watching the television usually encompasses cartoons, and nowadays, numerous cartoons such as Ban-Ten and Tom & Jerry etc are platforms of violence and due to frequent watching of these types of cartoon creating the aggressive behaviors in the children even in my surrounding most of the kids specially my nephew Kashif Mehmood is involved to much in watching these type of violent cartoons. Once I asked him about these cartoons and he was confidently be capable to tell me lot of thing regarding his favorite cartoon character. He reveals painful obstinacy as a result of viewing violence in cartoons and instigates to find himself with characters and start acting like them. Many times I have observed that some children in my family who are also interested to frequently watch cartoons on TV have adopted aggressive and ferocious behavior and specially Kashif has adopted a very antagonistic attitude and always tried to copy the actions of Tom & Jerry cartoon. He often plays rough and attempt to fight with same cartoonish mode. His parents are too much worried about his adaptation of negative attitude due to continues watching of violent cartoon. Moreover, Several times in my surrounding, children found fighting each other and shout louder with aggressive manner.  Subsequently, children who are involved in watching too much of violence on TV can is very possibly to have emotional and behavioral complications.

As a natural we have the aptitude for motivation, understanding and learning, and owing to this our thoughts are very easily influenced. As a result, our brains’ growth is a dynamic combination of nature and nurture. Accordingly it is imperative to select healthy surroundings for all toddlers. This means cartoons with violence like Ban-Ten and Tom and Jerry will be harmful for a kid because in generalized prospective, being collaboration with any atmosphere increases the growth of the mind. Consequently, a incredible aggregate of infancy engagement with the electronic media could edge social collaboration and might hinder the growth of a intellect’s societal roles.  According to researchers claim huge levels of violence in cartoons such as Ban-Ten and Tom & Jerry could make kids violent. They initiate that animated programs targeted at adolescents frequently have more violence than show broadcast for common spectators. Investigators claim kids copy characters just as far as they would with actual performers. The researchers likewise highlights that children inclined to mimic the adverse behavior they observe on TV such as rumor, scattering, nattering and eye-rolling. There are situations where kids take cartoons to a dangerous level. This is critical as parents occasionally just allow their kids consume time by watching TV as are busy in routine official activities. While parents tolerate their teenagers to watch cartoons, they must confirm that these cartoons are suitable and reasonable to watch. In case parents discover blasphemy or unambiguous language and scenes in a cartoon, they must not let kids to watch.

In all disciplines, there are theories that generate new information and carries regarding growth in a specific discipline. In direction to originate with a theory a definite method has to be adopted.
The theorist participates in trials, interpretations and uses a range of scientific procedures to reasonably form up a theory. Theorist also utilize hypothesis that are verified again and again for construction of theory.

Paradigm Description

Contrasting a theory, a paradigm is much wider. It denotes to a theoretical context. Just as theories, in all disciplines, there are paradigms that work as frames of reference that assist academics to channel their observations and findings. They are not very explicit as theories. It is paradigms that typically lay behind philosophies letting us to look at possessions in a specific view. It offers us with a viewpoint to considerate things. Let us attempt to comprehend what is meant by a paradigm through an instance. In Sociology, there are a variety of paradigms also identified as outlooks that assist us to recognize the society. For instance, structuralism, functionalism and Marxism are certain such paradigms. Everyone provide us a elementary model that supports to shape theories and work as a frame of reference. Q No.2            Discuss paradigm shift from powerful to limited effects of mass communication while discussing the major assumption of magic bullet theories and two step flow of information

PARADIGM SHIFTS IN MASS COMMUNICATION THEORIES

Encarta Dictionary describes paradigm as an illustration that works as a framework or mock-up for something, particularly one that shape the foundation of epistemology or hypothesis. A paradigm shift is a transmutation from one categorizing hypothetical standpoint to another. Throughout the supremacy of the print medium, all Dominant Media Theory was in position. It is associated to a bullet released at affiliate, with instant and straight effects. Spectators’ members were reflected as feeble, inert and could be influenced. Theory was widespread in the 19th century. The media was supposed to own the authorities to operate people’s behaviors. The 2nd stage in a further sanguine viewpoint starts taking into consideration the restrictions of mass communication. This epoch acknowledged as The Limited Effects Paradigm materialized in 1938. Supplemental study by Paul Lazars Feld on Presidential election 1940 in Erie County, he exposed that the control of the media was range bound and this was owing to individual differences.

The Magic Bullet Theory explicitly accepts that the media's message is a bullet fired from the media cannon into the spectator's mind. Likewise, the "Hypodermic Needle Model" utilizes the similar inkling of the "firing" prototype. It recommends that the media throw its communications direct into the inert spectators. Theory of Magic bullet is a communications model recommending that a deliberated message is straightforwardly incurred and entirely acknowledged by the recipient. The model was initially entrenched in 1930s behaviorism and basically contemplated antiquated for a long period, whereas huge discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data based mass customization has headed to a recent revitalization of the basic concept.

LIMITED EFFECTS PARADIGM OF MASS COMMUNICATION

Limited Effects Paradigm is a mass communication philosophy which discusses that the impact from a mass media message on individual is restricted or even inconsequential.  Media hardly direct effect individuals. Often people are privileged from straight propaganda manipulation. People did not trust everything what they perceive or comprehend in the media.
Limited Effects Theory was established in late 1940s by sociologists studying about societal perspective and media effects. At that time media researches were commissioned by the US administration and administrative exploration was maintained by democratic parties. The opportunity of the research was to examine how to influence media to best promoted political candidates.

Two Step Flow of information is a mass communication philosophy that proclaims that information from the media travels ultimately in two diverse junctures. At 1st stage opinion leaders give close concentration towards mass media and its messages obtain the information. After that the opinion leaders permit their own understandings of the real media gratified. The word “personal influence” was utilized to specify the procedure superseding concerning the media’s straight message and the definitive response of the spectators to the message.

The two-step flow of communication model states that maximum people custom their opinions beneath the stimulus of opinion leaders, who in turn are subjective by the mass media. In distinction to the one-step flow of the hypodermic needle model or magic bullet philosophy, this grasps that people are straightly inclined by mass media, rendering to the two step flow of information, ideas move from mass media to opinion leaders, and from them towards broader populace. The concept is founded on a 1940s study on societal inspiration that states that media possessions are secondarily recognized through the personal stimulus of opinion leaders. The majorities of people gets most of their info and are inclined by the media cast-off, through the personal stimulus of opinion leaders.

EXAMPLE OF POLITICAL NEWS OF DAWN NEWSPAPER

Imran’s bribery allegation stirs up a hornet’s nest

Despite calls from PPP and PML-N, PTI Chief refuses to name middleman

By Kalbe Ali &
Syed Irfan Raza

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s incendiary allegation that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tried to bribe him to not pursue the Panama Papers case drew a sharp reaction from the government on Wednesday.
A day earlier, speaking to party members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr Khan had alleged that PM Sharif had offered him Rs 10 billion to back off from the case.
During a series of TV appearances on Wednesday, he went further, claiming that the proposal came from a close friend of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Appearing in an ARY News show, he did not name the person that brought the “offer from the Sharif family” but said it happened only two weeks ago, when the judgment in the Panama Papers case had been reserved, but not announced.
“He is very close to Nawaz Sharif’s brother,” he replied when asked about the man who brought the offer. “He came to see me about two weeks ago and told me about the offer. Let me tell you that the Sharif family had even made him a very good offer and promised to ‘entertain’ him if he could convince me,” the PTI chief claimed.
He said the offer reflected the desperation of Sharif family which felt threatened because of the Supreme Courte verdict.
“Such offers are never made through direct contract. For instance, Nawaz Sharif cannot call me directly and make an offer; it’s always conveyed through different contacts. The same channel was used in my case,” he said.
The PTI chief lauded the Supreme Court judges who came up with such a judgment, despite knowing the Sharif family’s history.
“They always want to buy people. They have a history of bribing people [to protect] their illegal businesses and vested interests,” he added.
“This Rs10 billion was just a starting point; if I had showed some flexibility, they could have offered me more than that,” he conclude.

have also demanded that the PTI chief reveal who offered him money on behalf of PM Sharif, but the party seemed reluctant to disclose the middleman, who is said to be a common friend of Imran Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
When contacted, PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry refused to divulge the identity of the person who approached Mr Khan with the offer, saying: “Such allegations have already been leveled against Prime Minister Sharif in the past.”
“It was recounted by the late journalist Azhar Sohail in his book; mian Sharif had offered Gen Asif Nawaz a BMW car and a diamond key ring that cost more than the car,” he added.
The PTI spokesman said the prime minister had also been accused of getting monetary assistance from Osama bin Laden, founder of Al Qaeda, and the money was used to topple the government of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The PTI spokesman said Mr Khan had already disclosed this in an informal chat with some friends at his nephew’s wedding recently, a video of which went viral some ago.
Asked why Mr Khan was not disclosing the name of the person who offered him the money, the spokesperson said: “We will disclose the name of the person at appropriate time.”
To respond to the government’s allegations, the PTI announced that it would hold a press conference at the official PID premises today (Thursday). This would be PTI’s second press held on the government’s stomping ground.
Meanwhile, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira termed it the “legal and moral responsibility of Imran Khan to disclose the name of the person who tried to buy his loyalty. Mr Kaira said this was the most appropriate time for the PTI to reveal the name of that person.
A similar demand was made in a press statement, issued by the PPP central secretariat.
But in the words of Ms Aurangzeb, who also called on Mr Khan to name the middleman; “I think Imran Khan is fixing his own price.”

Govt response

To refute the allegation, State Minister for information Marriyum Aurangzeb held a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID) on Wednesday, where she criticized both Mr Khan and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), whose leader had also trained his gun on the ruling party a day earlier.
Accusing the PPP of having drifted away from its ideology, Ms Aurangzeb, remained critical of Mr Khan, describing him as being “naïve about politics”.
“He is a juggler; he started with the slogan of election rigging, moved on the phrase that an umpire is set to raise his finger, and has now resorted to criticizing all state institutions, including the Election Commission and judges of the apex court,” she said.
After branding Mr Khan “a liar” for making the Rs10 billion claim, she said the government was not interested in getting him to quiet down.
“Whatever he says in indirectly beneficial for us; whenever he criticizes us, he makes mockery of himself,” the minister said, adding: “This lends credence to the more mature, sober and responsible PM Nawaz Sharif, who also heads the largest political party in the country.”
She claimed that the petitions filed by Senator Sirajul Haq, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and Imran Khan had been rejected by the Supreme Court due to a lack of credibility, whereas the judgment had cleared PM Sharif.
